Yangsan Triathlon 2017
Race Summary: Individual 1st overall 2:04:40. Tri Club Competition, Seoul Tri 1st place and 1,000,000won Prize Money for the club!
This was my second year racing at Yangsan. Yangsan is a little different for me than many other races; My favorite aspect of this race is the comradery and sportsmanship between friends, family, and co-workers. For the past 2 years I have encouraged (coerced) my friends and co-workers to participate and we have made the trip to race together. It is deeply fulfilling to cheer on friends as they complete their second, third, or even first Olympic distance triathlon.
The start: Unfortunately I did not have the luxury of starting in the first group. For reasons unknown to me this race had a very strange start order of starting with the 50 year old age group first then my age group 2min later.
So I watched the 50 year olds do their start so I would know how to do it. They entered the water and did a "no dive" start. 2 min later I sat down on the start pontoon expecting to be called in the water. Next thing I know I hear "on your mark" followed by a loud air horn! Everyone around me proceeded to dive in the water as I panicked and very ungracefully fell in the water and started sprinting.
The Swim- course was long 1.7-8km 21:30 I will never complain about a long swim ;)
Swim Time: 21:07
The Bike - 15 turn arounds and 8-10 corners made it technically difficult. When you add 600+ other athletes by the 3rd loop (of 5 loop course) it gets pretty crowded. On the 3rd loop I took an over aggressive line on one of the turnarounds and ended up on the asphalt. I was only down for about 20 sec but aparently I caused a slow leak on my front wheel. as the race went on I could still push on the flats keeping my weight on the back wheel but the turns where difficult. I was lucky to finish the bike before my front tire went completely flat.
Bike Time : 1:00:40
The Run - flat, sunny, windy, and pleasant. I accomplished my pre-race goal of negative splitting the run. Run Time: 40:43
One of the best parts of the race was warming down with Younghwan Oh and cheering on the rest of the competitors!
